Day 8 - Grand Falls-Windsor Event Day

Day 8 – Grand Falls-Windsor – Event Day

Today was an “Event Day” in Grand Falls-Windsor, but we didn’t have any events planned ahead of time so it became sort of a combination of an Admin Day/rest day/exploration day. But as is life on the road, we’re always meeting new people and having great opportunities presented to us. Our only job is to take advantage of them. Our last Medal-Bearer of Day 7 was a gentleman by the name of Arthur King. He likes to refer to himself as King Arthur though. He told me that he was one of 27 kids that his parents had. I have no idea how that works but I didn’t question him.

                                                                   KING ARTHUR!

Anyway, Arthur is very involved in the community and one project that he has championed was the creation of an Accessible Recreation trail throughout the town and primarily taking advantage of the area around Corduroy Brook where a couple large ponds create a very enjoyable wildlife refuge area. For several years they championed this goal to create a network of trails. Finally receiving approval from governments and attaining grants, they created an Association to oversee and manage the creation and maintenance of the Corduroy Brook Trail system. We were fortunate to have a personal tour of the area by Arthur and some of the other members of the board, Albert, Scott, and Barry. It was clear that all were very proud of their efforts and they should be. They’ve created a beautiful recreational area where all residents and guests of Grand Falls-Windsor can enjoy a nature walk, bird watch, enjoy watching beavers work away on their lodges, loons swimming in the pond, and any number of other animals doing their thing. There were plenty of blueberry bushes along the route as well for some trail snacking!
Following the hike, they excitedly took us over to the Salmonid Interpretation Centre where we viewed an elaborate salmon ladder system that was created to assist the Atlantic salmon with their spawning up river by allowing them to bypass the “Falls” part of Grand Falls-Windsor. They treated us to a lovely lunch of Fish and Chips (no , not salmon...that just wouldn’t be right) on an outdoor patio with a terrific view of the falls. Then we walked down to an underwater viewing area where we could see all the salmon making their trek up river through a plexi-glass viewing window.
I was also able to get in a short run as I took advantage of the proximity of the Corduroy Trail system from our hotel and ran to and from our tour. It wasn’t a long run, but a good stretch of the legs to try and keep some semblance of fitness going while on the road.
Back at it tomorrow!
